Senior TE Andrew Clarke was a late scratch with a sore hip. Classmate Chris Holmes got the start in place of the injured co-captain. Clarke had started every game the previous two seasons, a span of 26 contests. Junior QB Bruce Gradkowski completed his first nine passes in tonight's season-opener and finished 19-of-30 for 202 yards. Senior WR Lance Moore caught a team-high 10 passes for 99 yards. It is the sixth career time Moore has tallied 10-plus catches. The co-captain had five-consecutive games of 10-plus catches last year, including a career-high 15 vs. Pittsburgh on Sept. 20. With tonight's setback, Toledo falls to 40-42-2 all-time in season-openers, including 2-2 under Tom Amstutz. Freshman punter Brett Kern made his collegiate debut. Kern averaged 43.0 yards per punt on eight attempts, including a high of 53 yards in the third quarter. Senior WR Pete Lepley caught his first two collegiate passes, including a 56-yard TD reception in the fourth quarter. Junior RB Quinton Broussard tallied a 14-yard touchdown scamper in the fourth quarter. It was Broussard's first TD since he tallied a one-yard TD run vs. Central Michigan on Nov. 9, 2002.
