Toledo, OH - Toledo's strong play on special teams last year may have gone unnoticed by some, but it was a key factor in the Rockets' winning season. Toledo ranked third in the nation in net punt returns (16.1 yards per return) and fifth in net punt coverage (40.7 yards per punt). Keying the return game was senior Lance Moore (Westerville, OH). Moore averaged 12.9 yards per punt return (15th best in the nation) and took one return back for a touchdown. He also ranked third in the MAC by averaging 21.7 yards per kickoff return. Scheduled to join Moore on kickoffs is senior Kenny Higgins (Long Beach, CA), who played sparingly as a junior college transfer last year. Moore's backup on punt returns is sophomore Steve Odom (Columbus, OH), who returned one punt for a touchdown in just three attempts last year. At placekicker, junior Jason Robbins (Sylvania, OH) is back for his third season. Robbins kicked three field goals and was 48-50 in extra points last year. Michael Krispinsky (Ashland, OH), a true freshman walk-on, was impressive enough in preseason that Coach Tom Amstutz has decided to let him handle the kickoff chores. Another true freshman, Brett Kern (Grand Island, NY), has won the job at punter.
