LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Adam Barmann threw four touchdown passes in a 49-point
first half Saturday night and Kansas went on to rout Toledo 63-14.
The Jayhawks (2-0) took advantage of great field position and mistakes by
Toledo's offense, defense and special teams to tie their team record for most
points in a half and break Toledo's record for the most given up.
John Randle scored twice on 2-yard runs and turned a screen pass into a
55-yard scoring play for a third TD.
Toledo, the consensus favorite in the Mid-American Conference, has yielded
63 points to both Minnesota and Kansas in its first two games.
Barmann, a sophomore who struggled in a 21-3 victory over Tulsa the week
before, was 20-for-24 for 249 yards and four TDs in the first half. He wound up
24-for-34 for 310 yards. His TD passes covered 17 yards to Mark Simmons, 5 to
Brandon Rideau, 55 to Randle and 16 to Gary Haeggans.
Randle finished with 104 yards on 19 carries and 79 yards on three
receptions.
Defensive end Charlton Keith picked up a fumble by Toledo quarterback Bruce
Gradkowski and went 21 yards for Kansas' sixth touchdown, making it 42-0 with
11:57 left in the second quarter.
Late in the fourth, Keith pounced on a fumble by backup quarterback Marques
Council on the 33 and Brandon McAnderson made it 63-14 with a 2-yard TD run
seven plays later.
The Jayhawks closed out the first half with an 11-play, 87-yard drive capped
by Randle's 2-yard plunge with 17 seconds remaining for a 49-7 lead.
Toledo got its only touchdown in the first half on a 51-yard catch-and-run
from Gradkowski to Steve Odom. In the third period, Gradkowski hit Kenny
Higgins with a 14-yard TD pass.
Kansas then made it 56-14 with a 59-yard drive capped by Austine Nwabuisi's
1-yard plunge.
Randle got the Jayhawks rolling on their first possession with a 2-yard TD
run that capped a 46-yard drive.
Simmons' catch made it 14-0, then David McMillian tipped a pass to
linebacker Nick Reid, who returned it 15 yards to the Toledo 5. On the second
play, Barmann hit Rideau for a 21-0 lead.
The Jayhawks made it 28-0 with 1:21 still left in the first quarter when
Randle took a screen pass over the middle and outran the pursuit on a 55-yard
play, juking Mike Chamberlain at the 20. The 28 points were the most in a
quarter since Kansas scored 30 against New Mexico State in 1991.
Scott Webb's nine extra points broke the school record. The Jayhawks, off to
their first 2-0 start since 1997, also scored 49 in a half in a 63-21 victory
over Illinois State in 1998.
