1998 Toledo Football Recap

12/7/1998 12:00:00 PM

Dec. 7, 1998

TOLEDO - They battled for all they were worth, but in the end turnovers made it an uphill fight for the Rockets. Toledo fell to Marshall, 23-17, in the Mid-American Conference Championship Game on Dec. 4, at Marshall University Stadium in Huntington, WV.

Marshall (11-1) will now face Louisville (7-4) in the Motor City Bowl at the Pontiac Silverdome on Dec. 23.

The Rockets led for much of the game, but were done in by turnovers and two missed field goals. A late UT rally fell short when the Rockets failed to recover an onside kick following a Mike Bilik touchdown reception from Chris Wallace with about one minute left in the game.

The Rockets had chances to put the Thundering Herd away. Toledo led, 7-6, late in the third quarter, when Chester Taylor fumbled on the Marshall 10-yard line. In the fourth quarter, a Bilik fumble was scooped up and taken into the end zone for a Marshall touchdown, making the score, 20-10 with 11:32 to play.

On UT's next possession, Marshall converted an interception into a field goal to make the score 23-10. Wallace marched the Rockets in for a late score, but it was not enough to stop Marshall from defeating Toledo in the MAC title game for the second consecutive season.

Toledo outgained Marshall in yardage, 427-369. Bilik and Ray Curry each had eight receptions, while Wallace was 30-54 for 337 yards in the air. Senior defensive end Gregg King, who had three tackles for loss, was named Toledo's game MVP.

"I'm very proud of this football team," said coach Gary Pinkel. "Our defense held a great offense to just 16 points. And our offense moved the ball as well as they have all year. You just can't make mistakes like we did."

The Rockets finish their season with a 7-5 record, their fifth straight winning season under Pinkel.

Kreitzburg, Lindstrom Make Academic All-MAC
Seniors Brock Kreitzburg and Gabe Lindstrom were named to the Academic All-MAC team, in a vote by the conference's faculty athletic representatives. Senior Mace Freeman and junior Jameel Turner were named honorable mention.

Kreitzburg, a wide receiver from Akron, OH, holds a 3.27 GPA in education. Lindstrom, a punter from Bisbee, AZ, has a 3.39 GPA in psychology.

Freeman, a wide receiver from Mississauga, Ont., has a 3.07 GPA in history. Turner, a cornerback from Cambridge, OH, holds a 3.15 GPA in accounting.

Lamar, Westrich Make First-Team All-MAC
Junior linebacker Jason Lamar and senioroffensive tackle Colin Westrich were named first-team All-MAC in a vote by the league's coaches announced on Nov. 23.

Westrich, from Delphos, OH, started all 11 games for the Rockets. He made second-team All-MAC as a junior last year.

Lamar, from Ypsilanti, MI, was second on the team with 114 tackles in 10 games.

Making second-team All-MAC for Toledo were junior tight end Mike Bilik (Novelt, PA), senior linebacker Darrick Beckwith (Warren ,OH) and sophomore defensive end DeJuan Goulde (Euclid, OH). Freshman placekicker Todd France (Maumee, OH) was named honorable mention.

Wallace Moves Up the UT Records Ladder
With his TD pass to Mike Bilik in the MAC Championship game, senior quarterback Chris Wallace moved into sole possession of second place on UT's career passing touchdowns list. Wallace has 44 TD passes-all in the past two seasons-which puts him one ahead of Gene Swick (1972-75). Ryan Huzjak (1993-96) is UT's all-time leader with 52 TD passes.

Here is how Wallace ranks in some key UT career categories:
* TD Passes: second (44)
* Passes Attempted: fourth (848)
* Passes Completed: fourth (454)
* Passing Yardage: fourth (5,454)

As a junior in 1997, Wallace broke 10 season or single-game records, including TD passes (27), passing yardage (2,955) and consecutive 200-yard passing games (4).

Tait Finishes Career With 4,153 Yards
Senior tailback Wasean Tait finished his storied career with a 60-yard performance vs. Marshall in the MAC title game, giving him 4,153 yards in his career, which spans back to 1993.

Tait is UT's all-time leading rusher and just the fifth player in the history of the Mid-American Conference to break the 4,000-yard barrier. Deland McCullough is the MAC's all-time leading rusher with 4,368 yards. Tait is fifth on the list.

Tait rushed for a team-high 625 yards on 151 carries this season. Tait rushed for 1,905 yards as a junior in 1995, the most ever by a MAC running back. He was named the MAC Player of the Year and earned second-team All-America honors.

MAC's 4,000-Yard Rushers
1. Deland McCullough, Miami-4,368 (1992-95)
2. Jerome Persell, WMU-4,190 (1976-78)
3. George Swarn, Miami-4,172 (1983-86)
4. Curtis Adams, CMU-4,162 (1981-84)
5. Wasean Tait, Toledo-4,153 (1993-98)

Appearance in MAC Title Game Makes Tait's Comeback Worth it
For tailback Wasean Tait, who went through two seasons of rehabilitation on an injured knee to play this season, all the hard work of the past two seasons paid off in the form of a MAC West title in his final home game as a Rocket.

"Sitting out the championship game last year was very hard for me," said Tait after UT's 17-14 win over CMU. "After watching our team lose (to Marshall) in the championship game last year, I just want to go back down there and play in the championship game."

In addition to his two-year absence due to the knee injury, Tait also missed two games this season with a broken jaw. He missed almost all of the last two seasons following a devastating knee injury suffered in the opening game of the 1996 season. He went through four knee surgeries and nearly two years of rehabilitation before returning to the Rockets' lineup this season.

Rocket 'D' Dominates
Toledo had one of the strongest defenses in the MAC, and the numbers bear that out.

The Rockets held opponents to 17 points or less in all but one MAC regular season game. Miami scored 28 points in its 28-14 win over Toledo on Sept. 26.

In eight MAC games this season, the Rockets allowed an average of 12.6 points per game, the best in the conference.

Kreitzburg Ends Career Second on UT Career Reception List
Senior Brock Kreitzburg caught two passes vs. Marshall, giving him 130 catches for his career. Kreitzburg is second in career catches on UT's all-time list to Don Fair, who caught 143 passes from 1969-71.

Beckwith is Toledo's nominee for Vern Smith Award
Senior linebacker Darrick Beckwith is Toledo's nominee for the Vern Smith Award, presented annually to the top player in the Mid-American Conference by the Downtown Athletic Club in Toledo. Beckwith led the Rockets with 134 tackles.

Miami tailback Travis Prentice won the award.

Free Safety Boyd Named to Freshman All-America Team
Freshman free safety Andy Boyd was named to the freshman All-America Team by Football News magazine.

Boyd started the final eight games of the season and was tied for fourth on the team with 76 tackles. He also tied for the team lead with three interceptions.Boyd missed the Marshall game due to a bout of mononucleosis.

Lamar Named MAC Defensive Player of the Week For Performance vs. CMU
Toledo linebacker Jason Lamar was named Defensive Player of the Week by the Mid-American Conference on Nov. 16. Lamar, a junior from Ypsilanti, MI, had 12 tackles, including four tackles for loss, in UT's 17-14 win over Central Michigan on Nov. 14.

France Kicks Rockets into MAC Championship Game
A year ago, Todd France was kicking field goals at Springfield High School in Maumee, OH. In the Central Michigan game on Nov. 14, he faced the ultimate challenge for a college football kicker: a game-winning kick on the last play of the game.

France showed his mettle, connecting on a 29-yard field goal as time ran out, giving Toledo a 17-14 victory over Central Michigan and a return trip to the MAC Championship Game.

Seniors Leave Glass Bowl in Style
Toledo's seniors ended their careers in the Glass Bowl in fitting fashion: a dramatic 17-14 victory over CMU.

"When a game comes down to this, these guys just know how to win," coach Gary Pinkel said of his seniors. "Good teams do that. It's the character of our team. They believe in themselves. What a fitting way for our seniors to go out. It was vintage what they've done since they've been here."

Said senior quarterback Chris Wallace, "The guys have been through this before. It was the fourth quarter of a championship game: do you want to go to a championship or do you just want to finish up the season and go home? Everybody pulled together and did what they had to do."

UT's seniors have had a four-year record of 34-11-1, including 19-3 in the Glass Bowl. In four years, they claimed three titles (MAC champs in 1995, MAC West champs in 1997 and 1998), and finished in second place in 1996.

"That's what you play college football for," said senior Kelly Herndon. "You want to come to a place that wins big games like this. I've been fortunate to play in big games like this all four years here. It's a wonderful feeling to always be able to play for a championship."

The departing senior class consists of: Darrick Beckwith, Romules Durant, Mace Freeman, Hiro Goto, Dwayne Harris, Kelly Herndon, Isaiah Jackson, Gregg King, Brock Kreitzburg, Gabe Lindstrom, Lem Reynolds, Wasan Tait, Matt Vaillant, Chris Wallace, Joe Weaver, Colin Westrich, J.D. Williams and Justin Wooley.

UT's Fabulous Freshmen
Toledo had 11 freshmen or redshirt freshmen listed in its two-deeps, but two first-year players stand out. Placekicker Todd France, a true freshman, and free safety Andy Boyd, a redshirt freshman, have been extremely valuable additions to the Rockets lineup.

France, from Springfield High School in Maumee, OH, was 11-19 in field goals, with a pair of 49-yarders, and a perfect 28-28 on extra points. His 29-yard field goal with no time remaining was the clincher in UT's 17-14 win over Central Michigan to clinch the MAC West title.

Boyd, a one-time walk-on from Whitmer High School in Toledo, tied for fourth on the team with 76 tackles. He also is tied for the team lead with three interceptions. Football News magazine place him on its Freshman All-America Team.

Other freshman standouts have been defensive lineman Sameer Hamood (55 tackles, six tackles for loss), center Nick Otterbacher (starter for most of the season), and defensive lineman Jim Barker (28 tackles).

Rockets Nominated for Academic Honors
Four Toledo players were nominated for GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. The four are senior Brock Kreitzburg (3.27 GPA in education), senior Gabe Lindstrom (3.39 GPA in psychology), sophomore Jim Harding (3.27 GPA in mathematics), and sophomore Marcus Hill (3.64 GPA in accounting). To be nominated, a player must have a 3.20 cumulative GPA or higher, be at least a sophomore in eligibility and be a starter or important substitute.

Five Rockets were nominated for Academic All-MAC. The five are Kreitzburg, Lindstrom, Harding, senior wide receiver Mace Freeman (3.07 GPA in history), sophomore fullback Lyle Green (3.02 in individualized study), and junior cornerback Jameel Turner (3.15 GPA in accounting).

Like Father, Like Son
Mel Long having a pretty good year. Both of them.

Mel Long, Jr., a sophomore wide receiver for the Rockets, was fourth on the team with 31 receptions and first with five touchdown receptions.

His father, Mel Long, Sr., became the first Toledo football player ever to be selected induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. Long, who was an All-American at UT from 1969-71, will be inducted into the shrine in August of 1999.

Rockets Get Fourth Straight Win over Falcons For First Time in School History
The Rockets' 24-16 victory over Bowling Green marked their fourth consecutive win against arch-rival Bowling Green, which is the longest UT winning streak in 63 meetings between the two schools. The schools first met in 1919. Bowling Green still leads the series, 33-26-4.

Toledo's four-year seniors finished their careers never having tasted defeat to their arch-rivals. Fullback Justin Wooley, linebacker Darrick Beckwith, wide receiver Ray Curry and cornerback Kelly Herndon all are four-year seniors who went a perfect 4-0 vs. the Falcons.

Another Big Crowd at the Bowl For BG Game
Despite the fact that the Bowling Green game was broadcast on local television, the paid attendance was 27,991, the sixth-larget crowd in Glass Bowl history. The largest home crowd ever was 33,040 vs. Indiana in 1994. The largest crowd for a BG game was 31,458 in the same year.

The crowd of 26,214 in the Western Michigan game was the 11th-largest crowd ever at the Glass Bowl. In the Rockets' home opener vs. Temple, there were 25,724 fans in the Glass Bowl, the 15th-largest in school history and the fifth-largest Glass Bowl crowd against a non-conference opponent.

Lindstrom Named to Farm All-American Team
Senior punter Gabe Lindstrom was named honorable mention to the Successful Farming All-Ameircan Farm Football Team. Lindstrom grew up on a ranch in Bisbee, AZ. Lindstrom is averaging 41.1 yards per punt. He also set the Yager Stadium record with a 76-yard punt vs. Miami. It was the longest of Lindstrom's career and the fourth-longest in UT history.

It's No Miracle, TV Show Features Chris Wallace
Producers from the television show "It's a Miracle" were in Toledo on Oct. 17-18 to do a feature story on Rocket quarterback Chris Wallace. They filmed highlights from the Bowling Green game, then returned to the Glass Bowl to interview Wallace and his parents on Sunday.

"It's a Miracle," seen nationally on the PAX-TV Network, features inspirational stories of individuals whose faith has helped them overcome difficult obstacles in their life. PAX-TV does not have an affiliate in Toledo, but does have affiliates in most other Ohio markets. Wallace's story ran on Nov. 29.

Wallace, who has born with a foot deformity, credits his childhood recovery to his mother, Reda Wallace. Reda massaged her son's feet and prayed every night, and soon Chris was able to walk very close to normally.

Wallace Ties School TD Record in Wild Third Quarter vs. WMU
Senior quarterback Chris Wallace tied his own school with five touchdown passes to lead Toledo to a 35-7 victory over Western Michigan. Four of those TDs came in an 11:21 span of the third quarter, including two in the final 34 seconds.

Wallace also had five touchdown passes last year vs. Bowling Green.

Wallace's first TD of the third quarter was a 55-yarder that Ray Curry pulled in with one hand at the 11:32 mark. After WMU struck with a TD a minute later, Wallace hit tight end Isaiah Jackson with an 11-yarder down the sideline.

Following a Bronco punt, Wallace came back with a 37-yard strike to Mel Long with 34 seconds left in the quarter. UT intercepted quarterback Tim Lester's first pass on WMU's next possession and Wallace struck immediately, an 18-yarder to Long with 11 seconds left.

Wallace set the school record with 27 touchdown passes last season.

Wallace Named MAC Offensive Player of the Week After WMU Game
UT senior quarterback Chris Wallace was named Offensive Player of the Week by the Mid-American Conference following his efforts in the Rockets' 35-7 win over Western Michigan on Sept. 19. Wallace tied his own school record with five touchdown passes, including four in the third quarter.

It was the fourth time in Wallace's career that he was named MAC Player of the Week. He earned the honor three times last season.

Players Honor Pinkel With Game Ball After WMU Win The Toledo players honored coach Gary Pinkel with the game ball following UT's 35-7 win over Western Michigan in honor of Pinkel's mother, who passed away earlier in the week.

Gay Hyland, 70, had been diagnosed with lung cancer about a month ago and died due to complications with her treatment just hours after Toledo's loss to Ohio State last week.

Mrs. Hyland was an ardent Rocket football fan, and was in attendance at UT's home opener vs. Temple on Sept. 5.

Emotional Return For Tait Wasean Tait's return to the Glass Bowl was an emotional moment for the 25,724 in attendance in UT's 24-12 win over Temple on Sept. 5.

The crowd cheered as Tait trotted out to the huddle on Toledo's first possession, and cheered even louder when he gained five yards on the Rockets' first play. But for Tait, he had gotten over his emotions before kickoff.

"I felt the emotion coming out on the field with the captains," said Tait. "But I pretty much put the emotion behind me and tried to play a good game."

Pinkel Becomes UT's All-Time Victory Leader
The Rockets' 24-12 win over Temple gave Gary Pinkel 51 wins at UT and made him the winningest coach in the 78-year history of Toledo football.

Pinkel had entered the season tied with Dan Simrell, who compiled a 50-37-2 mark from 1982-89.

Toledo: MAC's Team of the 90's
Toledo leads all Mid-American Conference schools in victories in the decade of the 90's with 66. The Rockets' record since 1990 is 66-32-3. Toledo also is number-one with 48 MAC wins since 1990.

Wasean Tait
"Anytime you get into the red zone, the object is to come away with points. We didn't do that."

Jason Lamar
"That showed a lot of guts by him to come back out there hurt. It gave their team motivation when he came back out."

Chris Wallace
"The main thing is, Toledo beat Toledo. When you have three turnovers in the second half, you aren't going to win a championship game. You've got to take care of the ball.
"You've got to give credit to Marshall. They're a championship team. They deserved it."

Gary Pinkel
"There's no way you can win games with the field goal problems and turnover problems that we had. Incredibly enough, we had a chance at the end if we had recovered that onside kick."
"I'm very proud of this football team. Our defense held a great offense to just 16 points. And our offense moved the ball as well as they have all year. You just can't make mistakes like we did."
(home field) "We don't talk about that because I don't ever want to use it as an excuse. I want to be back here next year. If I use that as an excuse, then I'm telling my players we're at a disadvantage. And I'll never do that."
(kicking) "Two bad snaps. We haven't had any bad snaps this year, and we got two tonight."
"I didn't sense that at all. I sense that we missed a field goal, missed another field goal, got the ball knocked out and scooped up for a touchdown. That's what I was sensing. And that sense didn't feel very good. That's the only sense I was feeling."

"Do you know how hard he was hurting? I don't know how he felt. It might have been incredibly tough for him, it might have been easy for him. I don't know. I don't have a pain meter that I could tell you that."
