TOLEDO, Ohio — University of Toledo Head Men's Golf Coach Jeff Roope announced the signing of David Amm (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Muhammad Afif Mohd Fathi (Selangor, Malaysia) to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday. The duo will attend the University of Toledo beginning in the 2018-19 academic year.
Amm earned Zimbabwe's National Amateur Golfer of the Year honors in 2017 and possesses a stellar international resume. At 14, he was the youngest participant ever to qualify for the Zimbabwe Open Championship (Pro - Sunshine Tour event). He has also finished second at the 2017 All-Africa Golf Championships (76-67-70-72) and at the 2016 Greg Norman Junior Invitational (71-77-72) as well as participated in the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup and Junior Orange Bowl on three occasions and the Eisenhower Trophy in Mexico in 2016.
"We are thrilled that David has decided to become a Rocket," Roope said. "He's excelled not only in Zimbabwe and Africa, but across the globe against world-class competition. I knew of David a couple years ago when he was playing for Zimbabwe at the Toyota Junior World Cup and I was coaching the U.S. team, so you can imagine how thrilled I was to have a chance to get to know him through the recruiting process. David's going to be a great fit at UT."
Mohd Fathi has won tournament titles at the Negeri Sembilan Amateur Open in 2015 (72-69-72) and 2016 (72-70-73) as well as the 2017 Nilai Spring Amateur (73-71), 2016 100 Plus Malaysian Junior Open Championship (68-71-71) and 2016 PGM Clearwaters Masters (74-68-75-75). He also finished runner-up at the 2017 100 Plus Malaysian Junior Open Championship (73-75-69) and 2016 Malaysian Amateur (69-69-74).
"In getting to know Afif it became quite obvious to us that his passion for the game was virtually unmatched," Roope said. "He's one of Malaysia's top amateurs and competes in some of Asia's best amateur & professional events. He's also had a great deal of experience playing team golf and is a junior member of the Malaysian Golf Association elite team. He's talented, personable, driven and is a welcome addition to our program."
