Bowling Green, Ohio - The Toledo track and field team competed in the annual Battle of I-75 meet against Bowling Green today. After 18 neck-and-neck events, the competition was declared a tie with each program earning 96 points. The Rockets earned 10 first-place finishes on the day.
Â
"Overall I'm pretty happy with the meet," head coach
Linh Nguyen said. "Across the board we had a lot of really good performances. You'd rather win than tie, but we had to scratch a few of our top distance kids because of nagging injuries. Not having [sophomore
Athena Welsh] and [junior
Jennifer Lichter] made a difference, and [senior
Petronela Simiuc] almost didn't run. A tie is better than a loss but it's not as good as a win, so we're leaving satisfied."
Â
UT held a five-point lead throughout most of the day until the 200m where the Falcons took the top three spots and moved ahead in the points total. The meet came down to the 4x400m relay: a BG win would make the Falcons the meet champions, a UT win would tie things up. Freshman
Kennedey Glover gave Toledo a healthy lead to start, and junior
Christina Johnson and graduate student
Danda da Silva kept the Rockets ahead. Junior
Yana Khabina set up in the anchor leg and was unchallenged, finishing well ahead of BG's Brianna Tidmore.
Â
The Rockets return to action on April 13 when the squad travels to Muncie, Ind. for the Ball State Challenge.
