Muncie, Ind. - The No. 3 seed Toledo women's tennis team won 4-0 over No. 6 seed Ball State in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament in Muncie, Ind. today. The Rockets advance to play No. 2 seed Miami, their first appearance in the conference semifinals since the 2008-09 season.
The Rockets started the day by winning the doubles point. Senior Sidnay Huck and junior Kokoro Chishaki won the No. 1 match 6-2, beating out Ball State's Audrey Berger and Rebecca Herrington to put UT up. Senior Colleen O'Brien and sophomore Dee Dee Leenabanchong ended their perfect season with a 7-6 loss in No. 2 doubles, leaving senior Megan Miller and junior Thalita Rodrigues to wrap up the first half of the match. Miller and Rodrigues battled to a 7-5 victory in the No. 3 spot to secure the point for Toledo.
The Cardinals tested UT throughout singles competition. Toledo dropped the first set in four singles matches, with only Huck and Chishaki opening with wins. The Rockets quickly recentered as the match progressed though.
Huck blanked BSU's Berger in two sets, winning 6-1, 6-3 in No. 2 to add another point to UT's score. Chishaki continued her dominance in the No. 4 spot, winning her match against Isabelle Dohanics 6-4, 6-1. The clinching point came in the No. 3 match from O'Brien. The Ann Arbor, Mich. native dropped her first set but rallied in the final two sets to earn the Rockets' final point.
Up next for Toledo is No. 2 seed Miami on Saturday. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m.
SCOUTING MIAMI
The Redhawks earned a first-round bye and enter the postseason 11-8 (7-1 MAC). Miami never dropped the doubles point during conference play thanks to the teams of Nelli Ponomareva/Anastasiia Vasiukhina and Emily Struble/Milana Lysova. Ponomareva and Struble have also been the Red and White's top singles players as well. Ponomareva has gone 7-1 this season while playing in No. 1 singles. Struble has gone 6-2 while playing in the No. 3 spot for Miami.
