Colleen O'Brien received the Leann Grimes Davidge Sportsmanship Award and sophomore
Dee Dee Leenabanchong earned second-team All-MAC honors, the Mid-American Conference announced today.
"I'm proud of Dee Dee for the hard work that she's put in since last year," head coach
Tracy Mauntler said. "She moved from No. 4 singles last season to No. 1 singles this year, that's quite a jump to make and she did it very seamlessly. She's also had an incredible year in doubles going 16-0 with Colleen. That's quite an accomplishment.
"I'm happy that Colleen is being recognized for her character on the court," Mauntler added. "She is a great teammate and has been such an impact player for us this season. It's quite an honor to receive this MAC sportsmanship award."
A native of Ann Arbor, Mich., O'Brien played the season at No. 3 singles with an 11-8 overall record, including 5-2 in the MAC. O'Brien also played at No. 2 doubles with a 4-0 MAC record and was 15-0 overall. The award is presented annually to a student who has displayed outstanding sportsmanship in MAC competition.
O'Brien is the sixth Rocket to receive the sportsmanship award with the previous recipient being Lisa Donnelly (1988), Ann Harrah (1989), Eva Almkvist (1992), Whitney Wasielewski (2002) and Emily Mazzola (2013).
Leenabanchong was named second-team All-MAC for the first time in her career. The Bangkok, Thailand native went 11-8 (3-5 MAC) in singles and recorded a perfect 16-0 (5-0 MAC) doubles record with O'Brien as her partner.
The Rockets' next match is Friday, April 27 when No. 3 seed Toledo takes on No. 6 seed Ball State at 2:00 p.m. in Muncie, Ind. in the first leg of the MAC tournament.
