Muncie, Ind - The Toledo women's track and field team competed in the Ball State Challenge in Muncie, Ind. Friday night. Five Rockets took first in their respective heats, with junior
Katie Dewey setting a new personal record and taking first overall in the shot put. Junior
Anna Bellman was another standout for Toledo, setting a personal record in the hammer throw and setting season bests in the discus and javelin events.
"The running events today became more about tactics since we were running in 25 mph winds most of the day," head coach
Linh Nguyen said. "However, we always come home with good results in the throws from this meet and this year was no different. Dewey threw a PR in the shot put and was just a few centimeters off the distance that qualified for the NCAA first round last year. Bellman also had a strong meet in all three of her throws."
Dewey and Bellman were Toledo's top performers on the day. Dewey's third attempt in the second flight of the shot put traveled 15.08m, putting her at the top of the field and .31m further than second place Kelsey Walters of Ball State. The Jerry City, Ohio native also competed in discuss where she threw for 44.33m, taking third place in heat two.
Bellman's day started by setting a personal record in the hammer throw. The Lima, Ohio native went for 50.30m in the second heat, taking third in her second outing of the season. Bellman also set season bests in the javelin and discus, tossing her spear for 37.39m and her disc for 46.11m.
The Rockets' next outing is the Jesse Owens Classic hosted by Ohio State. Competition is scheduled to run April 20-21 in Columbus, Ohio.
