Rockets Power Past Sacred Heart, 7-2

Baton Rouge, La.— Toledo ended its LSU Baseball Invitational appearance on a high note, defeating Sacred Heart, 7-2, on Sunday.

Senior Sam Shutes made his third start of the season, and he was dealing from the very first pitch. Shutes struck out a career-high 11 batters in six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and walking just one.

Toledo racked up 12 hits, the second-most in a game so far this season. Senior Matt Hansen led the way, going 3-for-4. Senior Brad Boss, sophomore Michael Ryan, and freshman Trace Hatfield all tallied two hits apiece, with Boss providing the big hit. His grand slam in the top of the third inning put the Rockets ahead 4-0. Junior Riley Campbell drove in a pair of runs and walked twice.

Junior Luke Schaefer, senior Alex Wagner, sophomore Austin Calopietro, and freshman John Servello all pitched as well for the Rockets. Calopietro and Servello combined to throw the final two innings, the pair did not allow a hit and struck out four.

Next up for Toledo is a Tuesday night game at Southeastern Louisiana. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CT.

How it Happened
  • The first runs of the game didn't come until the top of the third inning on the grand slam by Boss. The big hit was possible thanks to Hansen's double and walks from Campbell and Adolph. Boss was patient in his at-bat, working the count to 3-1 before driving his pitch into the seats in right field.
  • UT's hitters put together scoring chances all afternoon. In four of the first six innings, Toledo had either bases loaded or runners on second and third.
  •  Another Rocket run came in to score in the top of the sixth on a fielder's choice. Campbell grounded out to the second baseman, but Ryan came in to score and make it 5-0.
  • Shutes was terrific all afternoon, baffling Sacred Heart hitters all game long. He ended the second, third, fourth, and sixth innings with a strikeout.
  • The bottom of the seventh was the first inning in which the Pioneers were able to get to Toledo's pitchers. Sacred Heart's PJ DeFilippo drove in two runs on a single up the middle to cut UT's lead to 5-2.
  • The Rockets answered right back in the top of the seventh. Hatfield and Campbell both drove in big insurance runs to bring the lead back to five, 7-2.
  Weekend Notes
  • Boss' grand slam was the first by a Rocket since Ryan Callahan against Ohio on April 20, 2014.
  • Shutes had at least one strikeout in every inning he pitched on Sunday.
  • Hansen hit .500 for the weekend, going 6-for-12 with four extra-base hits (three doubles, one triple)
  • Freshman Chris Meyers made his collegiate debut on Friday night in a pinch hit appearance, and on Sunday he made his first-career start. He hit seventh and played third base.
  • Campbell did a great job moving runners around the bases. In nine at-bats with runners on base, he advanced runners seven times.
