Cleveland, Ohio-- Senior pitcher Sam Shutes has been named Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.

A civil engineering major with a 3.850 grade-point average, Shutes helped lead the Rockets to a 3-0 win at Western Michigan last Saturday.

Shutes tossed a career-high 8.1 shutout innings against the Broncos, striking out eight while allowing just five hits and one walk. It was the fifth start of Shutes' career where he threw at least five shutout innings and the second in the last month (3/4 vs. Sacred Heart). Shutes is now 4-0 and tied atop the MAC for most wins. He is 3-0 with a 2.55 ERA in the month of March. After his spectacular start against Sacred Heart earlier this season, he was named MAC Pitcher of the Week. 

Shutes and the rest of the Rockets are preparing for a Wednesday evening tilt against Ohio State in Columbus. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
