Toledo Finishes 5th at MAC Indoor Championships

Bowling Green, Ohio - Toledo's women's track and field team finished in fifth place at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in Bowling Green today. The Rockets earned 55 points through two days of competition.

Following the meet, three Rockets were named to All-MAC teams. Junior Shanice Williams was named First Team All-MAC while sophomore Atalia Da Silva and freshman Karoline Steppin were each named Second Team All-MAC.

"We faced a lot of adversity this weekend and I'm very proud of the way the women responded today," head coach Linh Nguyen said following the meet.  "Shanice, Atalia, and Karoline really got the momentum going for us, and the rest of the team fed off that energy—especially the three newcomers.

"The meet was extremely tight and the last two events secured a top-five finish for us. I thought coming in we could be third with a strong meet but the MAC is so tough right now that if you are off a little, you pay for it," Nguyen added. "Overall, I'm very happy with the toughness and resilience we showed. We're really becoming a complete program and I'm proud of that fact."

Williams had Toledo's best finish, earning first in the 60-meter dash with a personal-best time of 7.41. Steppin was recognized with the Freshman Field Performer of the Year award as well after setting a new season-best length of 12.66-meters in the triple jump.

UT's other top performers were sophomores Atalia Da Silva and Athena Welsh. Da Silva placed second in the high jump with a height of 1.72-meters, earning All-MAC honors. Welsh also finished near the top for Toledo, taking third in the 3,000-meter with a time of 9:34.28. Her time broke the previous Perry Field House record.

Toledo's next highest finisher was senior Janelle Noe  who finished fourth in the mile with a time of 4:56.06. Junior Petronela Simiuc finished sixth in the mile with a time of 5:00.43.

Welsh and junior Jennifer Lichter cracked the top eight in the 5,000 meters. Welsh earned fifth with a time of 16:50.55 while Lichter was seventh with a time of 16:59.44. Lichter's time was a new season best.

Next was Simiuc in the 800-meter where she finished sixth with a time of 2:14.92 to earn a second podium finish on the day.

Toledo earned sixth in the 4x400 medley relay with a time of 3:50.45 thanks to the team of junior Nautica Hill, sophomore Yana Khabina, junior Christina Johnson and Da Silva.

UT's final podium finishers were freshman Michelle Hostettler, Da Silva, junior Olivia Chinn and Barlow. The squad took eighth in the distance medley, finishing in 12:09.43.
