Toledo, Ohio— Toledo's men's and women's cross country teams were named 2017 NCAA Division All-Academic Teams by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Sophomore
Athena Welsh earned individual All-Academic Team honors from the USTFCCCA.
Teams earn the all-academic distinction by owning a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, while individual athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and finish in the top-25 (or 10 percent) at regionals or as an All-American in the national meet. The men's team posted a GPA of 3.22, while the women's team was at 3.63.
Last fall, 14 men's and women's cross country runners were named Academic All-MAC, led by second-team All-MAC performer Welsh. The sophomore finished in 10th place at the MAC Championships, becoming the first all-conference runner for UT since 2014. She was also one of three Rockets to earn MAC Distinguished Scholar honors, joined by
Janelle Noe and
Stephanie Barlow.
On a national scale, Portland earned NCAA DI Scholar Team of the Year on the men's side and New Mexico won on the women's side.
