Personal Bests, School Record Highlight UT’s Weekend

GENEVA, Ohio — The Toledo women's track and field team sent athletes to Kent State and to the SPIRE Division I Invitational this weekend. By all accounts, it was a successful two days of competition with MAC Indoor Championships just a couple weeks away.

"Katie used this weekend to continue her great season," head coach Linh Nguyen said. "Some of our younger runners ran strong with some personal best times, highlighted by Riley in the 3K. We're just two weeks away from MAC Championships now and we have some athletes in a good position, but there are still some who could use some improvement. We're still in heavy training though, so I'm pleased with where we are."

For the second straight weekend, junior Katie Dewey turned in a record-breaking performance for the Rockets. She broke her own weight throw record on Saturday with a toss of 57-7.75. The previous high-water mark was 55-0.0, which Dewey recorded in the first meet of the season, also at Kent State. Last weekend she set the UT indoor shot put record (50-0.5). She also participated in the shot put this weekend, putting up a mark of 47-11.75, good for a third-place finish.

Including Dewey, nine Rockets had personal-best performances. Continuing their strong season, Toledo's distance runners owned five of those PRs. Sophomore Riley Kwiatkowski finished in second place in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:09.14, her best-ever mark. Fellow sophomore Amanda Bakley also finished the 3,000-meter run with the best time of her career (10:21.33), as did sophomore Morgan Dembowski (10:48.56). Running in the 5,000-meter, junior Stephanie Sherman (17:33.10) turned in a new personal-best time.

Including Dewey, three Rockets had PRs in field events. Freshman Karoline Steppin (40-3.25) had her best triple jump score, finishing in second place at the SPIRE DI Invite and qualifying for MAC Championships. Sophomore Atalia da Silva's new best high jump mark is 5.60, which she achieved at the same meet as Steppin.
Competing in the 400-meter dash, junior Christina Johnson (59.84) had the fastest time of her career.

Toledo's next competition is Friday, Feb. 16 in Ann Arbor, Mich. where the Rockets will participate in the Silverston Invitational. That will be the last meet before MAC Indoor Championships on Feb. 23-24.
