Bowling Green, Ohio — The Toledo women's track and field team competed at the Tom Wright Classic on Friday at Bowling Green, winning two events.
"I saw some good things tonight in our second meet," head coach
Linh Nguyen said. "Karoline Steppin made her debut in the triple jump and had a good start to the season. Katie Dewey had another good meet with an indoor shot put PR that is bringing her closer to the school record."
Freshman Michelle Hostettler won her first collegiate race, the mile run, with a time of 5:04.73. She narrowly edged out Bowling Green's Rachel Durbin (5:04.84) to finish in first place thanks to her new mile PR.
"I was also impressed with a strong race from Michelle Hostettler in the mile to win and run a PR," Nguyen said. "Another good step in the early season and more information to work on in training over the next month."
Another freshman, Karoline Steppin, won the triple jump (39-7.25) and had the highest score of the field in five of her six attempts. It is her first collegiate event victory
Toledo claimed two of the top three spots in the 400-meter dash, with Danda da Silva (58.42) and Nautica Hill (58.70) finishing 2-3 in that race.
Two Rockets finished in the top five of the shot put: Katie Dewey and Chloee Kleespies. Dewey's mark of 47-9.75 was third-best of the night and an indoor PR for the junior. Kleespies (40-9.75) was one of two freshmen to have a score in the top five.
Stephanie Sherman was the top finisher in heat two of the mile run, finishing with a personal-best time of 5:16.35. Christina Johnson had the Rockets' fastest time in the 60-meter dash (7.80) for the second straight weekend. In the long jump, Madison Pierce's best jump was 17-9.5, and Dewey had the highest mark in the weight throw among Rockets (16.41).
Toledo's next competition is the Spire Midwest Open in Geneva, Ohio. Competition begins Friday, Jan. 26 and runs through the following Friday, Feb. 2.
