Indianapolis, Ind.— The Toledo women's swimming and diving team won 10 events on Friday en route to a 166-128 dual meet victory over IUPUI.
"I'm very happy with the meet today," head coach Jonas Persson said. "The girls stepped up and raced hard, and got the points needed for us to win. A lot of the swimmers that have had a rough couple of meets in January stepped up and showed that they are back."
Individually, Bec Welke led the way with two event victories. The sophomore placed first in both breaststroke events, winning the 100-yard variety with a time of 1:05.72 and the 200-yard race in 2:27.20. She also teamed up with Alida Ramden, Duda Sales, and Kristen Straszacker to win the first race of the meet, the 200 medley relay (1:47.13).
Sales and Ramden both had individual first-place finishes too. Sales topped the field in the 100 butterfly (57.04) and Ramden touched the wall first in the 200 IM (2:09.04).
Toledo swept the backstroke events thanks to Maureen O'Sullivan and Izzy Jones. O'Sullivan's time of 56.90 in the 100 backstroke was good enough for first place and Jones had the fastest mark in the 200 backstroke (2:04.12).
Rocket swimmers won three freestyle events on the night. Allison Dicke (24.36) won the 50 free, Lisa Eriksson (52.91) won the 100 free, and Macarena Garcia (5:07.43) won the 500 free. Eriksson and Dicke duked it out in the 100 free, with the former besting her teammate by just .05 seconds.
"The team is feeling confident and excited for our last dual meet of the year in a couple weeks," Persson said. "They can't wait to go down to Athens for the MAC championship."
To wrap up the meet Dicke, Eriksson, Jones, and Sales combined for a time of 3:32.22 in the 400 free relay, the fastest mark of the five competing foursomes.
On the diving boards, Elayna Yoskovich was the top Toledo finisher on three meter (238.95) and Megan Peepers (262.50) finished second on one meter.
Toledo swimmers showed fantastic depth on Friday, posting 31 top-three finishes.
Next up for UT is a weekend of competition at Bowling Green that will begin Friday, Feb. 2 at 4:00 p.m.
