TOLEDO, Ohio — The University of Toledo women's golf program will open its 2017-18 campaign next week at Ball State's Cardinal Classic in Yorktown, Ind. The Rockets are making their second-straight appearance at the tournament after not participating in the event since 2004. Toledo will compete against 18 other teams in the 54-hole tournament at the par-72, 6,204-yard Players Club with 36 holes on Monday, Sept. 18 and 18 more on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
"We just finished two weeks of qualifying, and I'm excited to get our season going," two-time MAC Coach of the Year Nicole Hollingsworth said. "We're going to be challenged this fall by what I think is the most difficult schedule in program history. I want our players to be challenged, and they'll definitely have that opportunity in the next two months."
Juniors Pimchanok Kawil and Pinyada Kuvanun are the Rockets' top returnees after receiving second-team All-MAC accolades a year ago. Kuvanun led UT with a 74.9 stroke average, while Kawil was just behind her with a 75.6 mark. Toledo will have juniors Natcha Daengpiem and Hannah Kochendoerfer and sophomores Thunpijja Sukkasem, Donchanok Toburint and Saranlak Tumfong on its roster as well.
The Rockets finished second in the BSU tournament last year, eight strokes behind two-time defending champion Eastern Kentucky. Kuvanun (72-73-73=218) and Kawil (74-72-73=219) both registered Top-10 showings for UT by placing sixth and tied for seventh, respectively.
Joining UT in the event are six Mid-American Conference members — Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Northern Illinois, Western Michigan — as well as Austin Peay, Bradley, Cleveland State, Dayton, Drake, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Indiana State, Indianapolis, Northern Kentucky, Southern Illinois and Western Illinois.
