Toledo, Ohio - University of Toledo football fans pitched in to donate $7,287.45 Thursday night to the American Red Cross in support of Hurricane Harvey relief efforts in Texas. Volunteers from the University of Toledo Student Government and Blue Key collected donations from fans as they entered Thursday night's season-opening football game at the Glass Bowl.
"We are grateful to our fans for stepping up and making donations to the people down in Texas who really need our help," said head coach Jason Candle. "We have a couple of players from Texas, so we know how much this disaster has affected the lives of so many people."
Â
UT junior defensive end Olasunkanmi Adeniyi, who is from Houston, expressed his gratitude to Rocket fans for their support.
Â
"It feels good knowing how much our fans care about the people down in Texas," said Adeniyi. "I really appreciate everything they've done. It makes me very glad that I'm a Rocket."
Â
In addition to the donations from Rocket fans, UT coaches and student-athletes came together to send boxes of UT clothing to the University of Houston, in response to an appeal from the Cougars' men's basketball coach Kelvin Sampson. Sampson has asked colleges from around the country to send sneakers and clothing to the University of Houston to distribute to hurricane victims.
There are also additional ways to support the relief efforts. Rocket fans can text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. In addition, fans are also encouraged to visit redcross.org to donate online.Â
