TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo men's and women's cross country teams begin the 2017 season in the annual Mel Brodt Invitational on Friday, Sept. 1 in Bowling Green, Ohio.
The Rockets have run in the Mel Brodt Invitational in each of the last five seasons. In last year's invitational, Alberto Chelimo won the 8K event in a time of 25:54.2. Chelimo looks to defend his title in his senior year.
Along with Chelimo, Toledo will have four seniors - Clinton Caddell, Titus Koech, Stalline Kurgat and Jax Talbot - to lead the team. Matthew Gibbons, Caleb Morehart, Josh Oeters, Brian Stubelt and Jacob Wistinghausen make up a class of five juniors that is looking to help the Rockets this season.
Toledo also has a young group of runners that will be in the scoring mix for the Midnight Blue and Gold. Aidan Gallagher and Dismas Koech return for their sophomore seasons, while Daniel Kemboi, Jon Koning, Jake Papish and Ben Williams step on campus for their first year at UT.
On the women's team, Joan Jepkirui was the lone Rocket in the Top 5, taking fifth in a time of 18:05.6 on the 5K course. Jepkirui will look to better her time and her place in her senior campaign.
Jepkirui will join fellow seniors Stephanie Barlow, Julia Mendiola, Janelle Noe, Delainey Phelps and Petronela Simiuc as leaders of the team. Juniors Nina Bendixen, Olivia Chinn and Jennifer Lichter also step into a larger roll on the 2017 roster.
The Rockets have a lengthy list of talented freshman and sophomores poised to make an impact this fall.
The Mid-American Conference coaches poll, released on Aug. 30, tabbed the women's team in the fourth position and the men as the number eight team in the conference. Eastern Michigan was picked to repeat as both the men's and women's cross country champion.
