TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the Illinois State Country Financial Invitational and the Roy Griak Invitational as part of their 2017 schedules, announced by UT head coach Linh Nguyen on Wednesday.
The Rockets begin the new campaign with the annual Mel Brodt Invitational on Friday, Sept. 1, hosted by I-75 rival Bowling Green. The Rockets will be competing in the meet for the seventh time in the last decade.Â
Illinois State will host the Country Financial Invitational on Friday, Sept. 8 in Normal, Ill. After a weekend of no competition, the Rockets will head to the University of Minnesota for the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn.
"The Griak is a big meet," said Toledo head coach Linh Nguyen. "There are usually multiple ranked teams there. There are teams from all over the country and it is a difficult course. That will be our first real test of the season."
The following weekend, UT will test its talents against the best runners in Ohio at the All-Ohio Championships in Cedarville, Ohio.Â
The Rockets will split the team to compete in the Bradley University Pink Classic on Friday, Oct. 13 and the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Louisville, Ky. on Saturday, Oct. 14. The Toledo men's team finished 14th in the pre-national meet last season.
"We decided to put our two biggest regular season meets three weeks apart," continued Nguyen. "The Griak and the pre-national are the biggest, most competitive meets and we wanted to space them out a little more and get some more training in between those two."
Toledo rounds out the regular season by visiting the reigning Mid-American Conference champions in both men's cross country and women's cross country for the Eastern Michigan University Fall Classic on Friday, Oct. 20.Â
Miami is set to host the 2017 Mid-American Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 28. The men's and women's teams will look to improve on their ninth and fifth-place spots from a year ago.
Nationally, the NCAA East Regionals will be held in Terre Haute, Ind. on Friday, Nov. 10 with the NCAA Championships following on Saturday, Nov. 18 in Louisville, Ky.
