TOLEDO, Ohio — Head Coach Tricia Cullop added to the Rockets' women's basketball roster on Wednesday when she announced that Tyra Carlsten-Handberg will transfer to Toledo from UIC. Carlsten-Handberg will become eligible to play for UT in the 2018-19 campaign and has three years of eligibility remaining.
"We're excited to add Tyra to our team," Cullop said. "She gives us needed depth at the post position. Tyra runs the floor well, uses her length to disrupt shots defensively, and possesses three-point range. She's also an exceptional student and is the type of person who will mesh well with the strong chemistry we have that helped propel us to a MAC championship this past year."
Carlsten-Handberg's addition brings the Rockets' incoming recruiting class size to four, including Mariah Copeland (Toledo, Ohio), Tatyana Davis (Madison, Ga.) and Zaria Wright (Concord, N.C.).
Carlsten-Handberg, a 6-foot-4 forward from Stockholm, Sweden, started 24 of 31 games for the Horizon League member Flames this past season, tallying 6.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.0 assists, a team-high 0.6 blocks and 0.9 steals in 22.1 minutes. She shot 38.1 percent (82-of-215) from the floor, including 27.8 percent (25-of-90) from three-point land, and 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from the free throw line.
Carlsten-Handberg led the team in rejections, as well as finishing second in three-point field-goal percentage, third in games started and three-point field-goals made, fourth in overall rebounding and overall field-goals made, tied for fourth in helpers and fifth in scoring and thefts.
Carlsten-Handberg scored in double figures on nine occasions, including a season-high 18 points against Valparaiso on Jan. 28. She also tallied a double-double at Wright State, registering 10 points and a season-best 12 caroms on Feb. 11.
