Athena Welsh Takes Third in USATF Junior Outdoor Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Freshman Athena Welsh ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:29.82 to finish third at the USA Track & Field Junior Outdoor Championships at Hornet Stadium.Â
Welsh was 0.36 second off of her collegiate best time of 10:29.46 which she ran in the Jesse Owens Classic in late April.
Sarah Edwards of Virginia Tech won the event in a time of 10:14.67 with Alexandra Harris taking second place (10:25.80) running unattached.
Athletes in the USATF Juniors must be at least 14 years old on the day of competition and cannot turn 20 years old at any time during 2017. The qualifying standard for the 3,000m steeplechase is 11:00.14. Welsh ran a qualifying time in two races during the season.
