AVON, Ohio - Senior LHP Steven Calhoun recorded his third complete game of the season, but the Rockets were held to a season-low three hits in a 7-0 loss to No. 1 Kent State in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament on Wednesday at Sprenger Stadium.
UT (16-40) started the game with a lead-off double by junior Matt Hansen, but the shortstop was stranded at third base to end the top of the first inning.
Calhoun retired the first three Golden Flashes he faced to breeze through the bottom of the frame. In the second, Calhoun worked around a lead-off hit-by-pitch and a two-out walk to keep the MAC regular-season champs off the scoreboard.Â
Freshman Michael Ryan reached on an infield single to open the Toledo third, but he was caught stealing to end the threat.
Kent State (36-16) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. A lead-off single, a hit batter, and a walk filled the bases before a bases-loaded free pass plated the eventual game-winning tally.
Calhoun retired KSU in order in the fourth, as the Rockets continued to struggle offensively. The Golden Flashes added a run in the fifth on a 4-6-3 double play that scored a runner from third base.
UT retired the first two KSU batters to start the seventh before the Golden Flashes rallied for five runs to complete the scoring. Four-consecutive singles knocked in the first run and loaded the bases before a grand slam ballooned the Toledo deficit to 7-0.
The Midnight Blue & Gold went in order in the eighth, and sophomore Riley Campbell was stranded after a two-out single in the ninth to close the game.
Calhoun (3-7) was tagged with the loss, while Kent State's Eli Kraus (9-3) picked up the complete-game win with a three-hit shutout.
The Rockets will play the loser of No. 4 Ball State and No. 5 Ohio on Thursday, May 25 at approximately 1:00 p.m.
