TOLEDO, Ohio - The Rockets' track & field team edged out a 100-99 win over I-75 rival Bowling Green in the BGSUÂ Dual meet on Friday afternoon at the Toledo Outdoor Track & Field Facility.
The victory is Toledo's first dual meet triumph over Bowling Green since the year 2000.
A close meet throughout, the outcome was decided in the final couple of event, namely the triple jump and the 3,000-meter run. In the triple jump,
Deja Martin went from fourth to third place on with a leap of 10.89, her final attempt of the competition, to swing two points in favor of the Rockets.
Athena Welsh and BGSU's Rachel Walny ran neck and neck the majority of the 3,000 meters, but with around 600 meters to go Welsh widened a gap to take the win in the event and all but seal the win for the Midnight Blue & Gold.
After Welsh's win, all the Rockets had to do was finish in the 4x400-meter relay. The relay went off without a hitch and the Rockets ended the meet one point superior.
Toledo received a major contribution from its jumps crew, winning three of the four disciplines.
Madeline Pacella set a new meet record in the high jump, flying over the 1.75m bar to win the event.
Ty'Shai Freeman took second in the high jump and went on to win the triple jump with a mark of 11.74 meters.
Madison Pierce placed second in the long jump (5.63m) and Maddie Jarrett combined with
Alissa Jenkins to finish 1-2 in the unopposed pole vault.Â
Anna Bellman won the javelin with a toss of 33.21 meters and
Kallie Strauss took third with a heave of 29.84 meters.
UT dominated the distance events, starting with the 2,000m Steeplechase.
Olivia Chinn and
Zita Molnar ran away with the top two position, finishing in 7:03.17 and 7:07.05, respectively. The success continued in the 1,500m run which Petronela Simiuc,
Joan Jepkirui and
Janelle Noe swept the podium. Simiuc won the race in 4:34.30.
Simiuc kept her winning ways going as she also took the win in the 800m run, just four events later. Simiuc won this race in 2:17.51 while
Theresa Warsecke place third in 2:21.41.

Toledo heads to Muncie, Ind. for the Ball State Challenge on April 14-15.
