Toledo, Ohio - The 2017-18 University of Toledo Blue Squad cheerleaders have been selected, cheerleading coach Nick Langenderfer announced today. Tryouts were held this past weekend.
The UT cheerleading program consists of two squads, Blue and Gold. The Blue Squad practices over the summer, volunteers at community events and helps with Athletic Department sponsored events such as the Reverse Raffle and the annual golf outing. During the fall, the Blue Squad cheers at all home football and volleyball games, travels to all away football games, and can be found at numerous pep rallies and appearances around town.
"Everyone that is a part of our program is excited for what 2017-18 is going to bring," said Langenderfer. "Being a cheerleader is so much more than just yelling and hoping the crowd yells back. Our program has a strong commitment to the University. Squad members invest themselves in the teams they are cheering for and take pride in supporting our athletic programs.
"We often hear from coaches, athletes, parents of athletes, alumni and Rocket fans who tell us how much they appreciate what we do. When our kids hear that, it only makes them love what they are doing even more."
In addition to cheerleading, the squad had a cumulative GPA of over 3.1 for the fall semester. In addition, Langenderfer says nearly all of his athletes hold part-time jobs on or around campus.
Tryouts for the Gold Squad will begin on Sunday, Aug. 20 and are open to all full-time UT students and incoming freshmen. Anyone with gymnastics or cheerleading background is encouraged to contact Coach Langenderfer at toledocheerleading@gmail.com.
