KENT, Ohio - The Toledo baseball team was on the wrong side of a walk-off finish for the second time in the series as Kent State pulled the feat, 3-2, on Saturday evening at Schoonover Stadium. The Golden Flashes used three singles and walk in the ninth inning to chase across the winning run.
The Rockets (14-25, 7-7 MAC) used an impressive start from fifth-year senior
Ross Achter to keep Kent State out of the scoring column for the first six innings. Achter was stellar in 8.0 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on nine hits and two walks.
Achter also tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts, becoming the first UT pitcher to punch out double digits since reaching the number himself in last season's Mid-American Conference Tournament against Kent State.
Much like Friday's contest, the two starting pitchers matched each other zero for zero as Kent State's (23-12, 9-2 MAC) Zach Willeman was on his game as well. Achter and Willeman dueled and started the game with 6.0 scoreless innings apiece.
The Rockets were the first to the scoreboard, bringing in a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Senior
Corey Tipton singled with one-out and stole second to move into scoring position. Junior
Brad Boss lined a single to right to score Tipton and went all the way to third on a two-base error. The next batter, sophomore
Riley Campbell, hit a ball hard at the shortstop who could not handle the hop, allowing Boss to score from third.
Again, Kent State followed the Rockets run-for-run, tying the game 2-2 in the bottom of the inning. A lead off single and a one-out double put two Flashes in scoring position. The first run scored on a wild pitch and the tying run scampered home on a passed ball.
UT had a chance to retake the lead in the eighth when sophomore
Ross Adolph created his own two-out rally. Adolph singled, stole second and advance to third on the catcher's throwing error. He was stranded at third to end the inning.
KSU matched with a scoring opportunity in the home half as a lead off singled had the Flashes in business against Achter. A sacrifice bunt and a useful ground out moved the go-ahead run 90-feet away from home. Achter ended the inning with a called third strike on an 89 mph fastball and fired up fist pump heading to the dugout.
In the ninth, Boss singled with two outs and made his way to second base, but was left there when the third out occurred.
Kent State singled wth one out but the base runner was gunned down by Tipton, attempting to steal. Another single and a walk with two outs put a Golden Flash in scoring position and set the stage for Tim DalPorto's walk-off single.
Fifth-year senior
Caleb Schillace (0-1) is charged with the loss for the Rockets. Connor Wollersheim (2-1) picks up the win for Kent State.
The Rockets and Golden Flashes meet again tomorrow, April 23, for the series finale at 1:00 p.m.
