CLEVELAND, OH - No. 6 seed Toledo (22-8) will meet No. 3 seed Kent State (19-11) in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Mid-American Conference Tournament on Wednesday, March 8 in Quicken Loans Arena. The opening tip is slated for approximately 7:30 p.m. and will be televised on BCSN and Spectrum Sports, as well as streamed on ESPN3.
UT and KSU have battled on nine occasions in the MAC Tournament, with Toledo holding a 7-2 ledger (.778) in the postseason. The cross-division rivals most recently met in the semifinals of the 2010 tourney in Cleveland, with the Rockets securing a 51-49 neutral-court triumph.
Toledo and Kent State will also square off for the second time this season and the 71st time overall. The Rockets suffered a 70-60 road setback against the Golden Flashes in the M.A.C. Center to snap an eight-game winning streak in the series. Despite its most recent loss, UT leads the all-time series against KSU, 41-29.
Toledo, which is 10-4 (.714) away from home this season, advanced to the quarterfinals of the post-season tourney with a convincing 65-37 home victory against No. 11 seed Akron (9-21) on Monday.
Sophomore Olivia Cunningham scored 13 points and freshman Mariella Santucci added 12 points and eight assists to lead a balanced Toledo attack in a 28-point rout over the Zips.
   Â
Junior Jada Woody added a season-high 10 points and junior Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott chipped in with nine as Toledo turned a close game into a blowout with a second-quarter explosion that flipped a one-point deficit into a 15-point halftime lead.
Akron, which shot just 25.0 percent (14-of-56) from the floor, held a 16-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, then managed just 21 points the rest of the way. No player for UA scored more than six points.
Â
The Rockets stormed out of the gates quickly, scoring the first seven points of the game and forcing an Akron timeout at the 7:29 mark. The Zips battled back, however, going on a 14-3 run that gave them a 16-15 edge at the first break.
Â
The second quarter belonged to Toledo, however, as the Midnight Blue & Gold outscored the Zips, 18-2, to take a 33-18 edge into the locker room at halftime. Bravo-Harriott highlighted a 16-0 Rocket run to close out the half with a three-point play at the 2:45 mark and a three-pointer with 36 seconds left.
Â
Toledo continued the barrage in the third quarter. A three-pointer by senior Janice Monakana upped the lead to 40-22 early in the third quarter. Moments later, Monakana made a layup to push the lead to 48-24, forcing an Akron timeout with 5:11 left in the quarter. Akron cut the lead to 48-27 on a layup by senior Alex Ricketts with 2:02 left. Toledo then extended the lead to 52-27 on a layup by sophomore Mikaela Boyd at the buzzer to end the third quarter. For all practical purposes, the game was over at that point, as Akron never get closer than 25 points the rest of the way.
Toledo continues to be fueled offensively by the quartet of Monakana, Boyd, Bravo-Harriott and sophomore Kaayla McIntyre, who are tallying 12.7, 12.0, 11.8 and 10.3 ppg, respectively. This group accounts for 63.0 percent of the team's scoring.
UT will take on a Kent State squad that had its nine-game winning streak snapped in a 77-62 road loss at Buffalo on Saturday in its regular-season finale. Jordan Korinek and Larissa Lurken paced the Golden Flashes with 23 and 21 points against the Bulls, respectively.
