TOLEDO, OH – Toledo successfully defended its home turf with a 65-57 victory over Eastern Michigan on Wednesday before 3,372 fans in Savage Arena. With the win, UT raises its record to 18-8 overall, 9-6 in the Mid-American Conference.
The Rockets utilized a balanced offense attack and put four players in double figures against the Eagles (6-21, 1-14 MAC) to improve to 10-4 at the friendly confines of home this season. Sophomore Kaayla McIntyre paced UT with 15 points, followed closely by sophomore Mikaela Boyd, senior Janice Monakana and sophomore Halee Printz with 14, 12 and 12, respectively. The Midnight Blue & Gold also received eight points from junior Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott to remain in sixth place in the overall MAC standings with only three games left in the regular season.
As a team, Toledo shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the field and a sizzling 83.3 percent (15-of-18) from the free throw line to sweep the regular-season series against its MAC West Division rival.
The Rockets did a bulk of their damage on the interior and posted a decisive 42-24 edge in points in the paint. They also finished with a sizable 43-34 rebounding advantage, spearheaded by Monakana, McIntyre and Bravo-Harriott with eight, seven and six boards, respectively.Â
Phillis Webb led Eastern Michigan with a game-high 17 points, while Toledo native Sasha Dailey had 13.Â
The Rockets ended the first period on a 12-5 run to take an 18-14 lead after the opening 10 minutes. Five different players tallied points over the final five-plus minutes to give the home team a two-possession advantage at the conclusion of the quarter. It proved to be a lead they would not relinquish.
UT remained on target scoring the ball in the second period, tallying 13 of the first 15 points to extend its margin to 30-21 at the intermission. Printz ignited the rally with seven points, draining a pair of free throws, a triple from the corner and a two-point field goal from the wing to create a nine-point cushion at the break.
EMU cut into the deficit at the outset of the second half on the strength of strong perimeter play from Dailey and Webb. The duo scored EMU's first nine points to trim its deficit to five points, 35-30, at the 5:55 mark.
With the lead nearly cut in half, the Rockets needed to swing the momentum back in their favor. They pounded the ball inside and received three-straight layups from junior Michaela Rasmussen, Monakana and McIntyre to start a game-sealing 14-1 run to open up a 49-31 advantage with 35 seconds remaining in the period. UT also benefitted from six points by Boyd and a pair of free throws from Printz to halt any chance of an Eastern Michigan comeback.Â
The Rockets' lead was not challenged over the final 10 minutes, as they emptied their bench in the waning moments, en route to securing the eight-point home victory.
Toledo will wrap up its home slate against MAC West Division rival Western Michigan (16-10, 7-8 MAC) on Saturday, Feb. 25. The opening tip versus the Broncos is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be streamed on ESPN3.
After Saturday's final home game, UT's two seniors - Sophie Reecher and Monakana - will be honored. The duo has been a part of 80 overall victories over the last three-plus seasons, including 40 league wins.
The Rockets will also recognize senior student manager Emily Cornieles and senior student athletic trainer Meghan Michael as part of their post-game festivities.
UT and WMU will battle for the second time in a little over two weeks and the 76th time overall. The Rockets claimed a 72-66 road victory over the Broncos on Feb. 8 in University Arena.
Toledo leads the all-time series, 54-21, and has won the last six meetings against its division foe. A season ago, UT secured an 80-73 home triumph against WMU in Savage Arena (Jan. 9).Â
The Rockets also hold a 27-8 advantage in games played at home and have emerged victorious in seven of the last eight match-ups in Savage Arena.
