Rockets Look to Take Flight at 2016-17 MAC Championships

TOLEDO, OH – The Toledo women's swimming and diving team will head to the 2016-17 Mid-American Conference Championships on Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 22-25 in Oxford, OH. Competition will be held in the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center in Miami University's Recreational Sport Center.

    The Rockets have been preparing for this season's championships all season, but they have increased their focus and intensity in the past three weeks. UT has not had a dual meet since Jan. 28, and it has used this time off to rest, repair and rebuild.

RANKED ROCKETS
    Seven Toledo swimmers currently rank in the Top 20 of the MAC in an event this season.
    Freshman Izzy Jones holds a position in four different events. Jones ranks third in both the 200 free (1.48.05) and 200 back (1:57.32), fifth in the 500 free (4:50.10) and 10th in the 100 back (55.71).
Freshman Maureen O'Sullivan is tied for sixth in the 200 back (1:59.78), eighth in the 100 back (55.27) and 18th in the 200 IM (2:05.14).
    Junior Jessica Avery ranks ninth in the 100 breast (1:03.86) and 17th in the 200 breast (2:20.13), while junior Maggie Hack ranks 17th in the 200 free (1:51.70) and 19th in the 100 free (51.32). Junior Katrin Streicher holds the 18th spot in the 200 fly (2:05.91) and the 20th spot in the 200 fly (2:05.91).
    Freshman Bec Welke is 16th in the 100 breast (1:04.50), and junior Emily Frederick ranks 20th in the 400 IM (4:31.43).

TOLEDO'S TOP TIMES
    There are eight current Rockets who hold a combined 18 times on Toledo's all-time Top-10 performance list. Out of the nine times that have been recorded this season, seven were accomplished by freshmen.
    Jones holds the third-best time in the 200 free and 200 back, while also ranking fifth in the 100 back and sixth in the 500 free. Freshman Duda Sales is eighth in the 100 fly, while O'Sullivan ranks third all-time in the 100 back and sixth in the 200 back. Avery ranks fifth in the 200 breast and sixth in the 100 breast.
    Other Rockets who hold top times are senior Rachael Hester (8th in 400 IM), Streicher (4th in 100 fly, third in 200 fly, 7th in 200 IM, 8th in 100 back), Hack (10th in the 200 free, 500 free, 1,650 free), and junior Brittany Puthoff (10th in 200 breast).

FRESHMEN MAKE A SPLASH
    Toledo's freshman class has made a huge impact in the pool this season. They collectively hold eight top-20 season times in the conference, seven times on UT's all-time top-10 list, and 14 times on Toledo's top-three event performance list this season. The six Rocket newbies have accumulated 59 top-5 finishes in this season's meets.

LAST TIME AROUND
    Toledo finished seventh at the 2016 MAC Championships. Following the meet, seniors Lauren Comer and Samantha Richart were named second-team All-MAC for their success in the championships and throughout the season.
