Cleveland, OH – Senior Chandler Rice was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday. The weekly honor is the first Rice this season and the fourth of her career. It is also the second-straight week a Toledo player has earned this award.
Â
"I'm extremely proud of Chandler and her hitting performance this past weekend," said Head Coach Kristen Butler. "We focused a lot on hitting with runners in scoring position in the off season and it was great to see her produce a lot of RBI for us in the tournament. She has outstanding senior leadership on and off of the field and I'm going to continue to look to her to help lead our team through the season."
Â
Rice started all five games for Toledo at second base and had a dominant weekend at the plate at FAU's Strikeout Cancer Tournament. The senior posted a .600 batting average (12-for-20), scored six runs, tallied seven RBI and totaled 21 bases. She registered a 1.050 slugging percentage and a .619 on-base percentage in the tournament.
Â
In UT's contest vs. Tulsa, Rice was responsible for all of Toledo's RBI with her two home runs. She put the Rockets on the board with a solo homer in the third frame and then hit a two-out three-run bomb to give UT a 4-3 lead. The senior also led the way offensively in Toledo's 14-4 six-inning victory over Savannah State. Rice recorded a career-high three RBI doubles in the contest and plated three runs herself. Rice also swiped three bags over the weekend.
              Â
The Louisville, OH native leads the conference in hits (15), total bases (29), at-bats (35) and fielding percentage (1.000) this season. She is tied for third with three doubles and three home runs, tied for fourth with nine runs scored, and tied for seventh with 10 RBI.
              Â
After just two weeks into her senior season, Rice has moved up the ranks in seven categories in Toledo's all-time career record book. The two-time All-MAC performer sits fourth in doubles (37), tied for seventh in home runs (12), ninth in hits (183), total bases (263) and assists (290), and 10th in RBI (83) and stolen bases (31). Rice's current career batting average of .346 and current career slugging percentage of .495 sit third all-time at UT.
Rice and the Rockets will head to South Carolina this weekend for four games in the Buffalo Wild Wings Classic.
