TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo baseball team begins its 2017 season with a four-game series at Tennessee Tech from Feb. 17 - Feb. 19 in Cookeville, Tenn. The Rockets will play single games on Friday, Feb. 17 and Sunday, Feb. 19 with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18. All games will be played at Bush Stadium at the Averitt Express Baseball Complex.
The Rockets finished last season with a 19-38-1 record and won nine of their last 11 games to make the Mid-American Conference Tournament. UT returns all three of its weekend starting pitchers, its closer and many of the position players from 2016.
Senior Steven Calhoun will take the baseball in the season opener. The 6-foot-8 lefty recorded a 6-8 record with a 5.21 earned run average in 15 starts last season. Fifth-year senior LHP Ross Achter will pitch the early game of the double header on Saturday with senior Sam Shutes toeing the rubber in the nightcap. Achter was the ace of last year's staff, leading the team in wins (7) and ERA (3.10). Shutes won a pair of games and accumulated a 4.43 ERA a year ago.
Sophomore lefthander Michael Jacob anchors an experienced bullpen consisting of seniors Steven Duby and Jordan Kesson, juniors Alex Wagner and Nolan Silberhorn and sophomores Casey Johnson and Luke Schaefer. Jacob locked down eight saves in 2016 which ties for fourth most in single-season history at Toledo.
Leading the Rockets' offense will be junior first baseman Dalton Bollinger and sophomore outfielder Ross Adolph. Bollinger and Adolph return to the lineup after hitting .264 (56-for-212) and .268 (44-for-164), respectively. Adolph was second on the team in runs scored (27) while Bollinger was second on the team in RBIs (29).
Junior outfielder AJ Montoya drove in 23 runs and led the team with seven home runs last season and will return to provide a power threat in the middle of the lineup.
Tennessee Tech sported a 31-24 ledger last season and made an appearance in the Ohio Valley Tournament at the conclusion of the season. The Golden Eagles return Kevin Strohschein who led the team's returners in average (.393), runs (57), hits (90), doubles (21), home runs (15) and RBIs (73).
