DETROIT, Mich. – Senior guard Tre'Shaun Fletcher hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to lift Toledo (5-3) to a dramatic 89-86 victory at Horizon League foe Detroit Mercy (4-5) on Wednesday evening. The win was the Rockets' first road triumph of the season and second in last three contests in Calihan Hall.
"This was a really good road win for us and hopefully this can help us start building some momentum," Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk said. "We didn't start the game very well, but I thought we really played well the final 10 minutes of the first half and the first 10 minutes of the second half."
Junior guard Jaelan Sanford poured in a team-high 23 points to lead a balanced Rocket attack that saw five players tally double-digit point totals. Fletcher finished with 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.
Sophomore center Luke Knapke (15 pts.), freshman guard Marreon Jackson (14 pts.) and junior forward Nate Navigato (10 pts.) were also in double figures for UT. Junior forward Taylor Adway just missed scoring in double digits, finishing with a season-high nine points and career-high eight boards.
Fletcher's work on the boards helped the Rockets to a dominating 44-32 advantage on the glass. He also dished out six assists to match Sanford for team-high honors as UT collected 20 helpers in the contest.
Junior guard Josh McFolley led Detroit with 24 points.
Toledo shot 49.2 percent in the contest, including an impressive 44.0 percent (11-of-25) from behind the arc. Detroit posted a 47.1 shooting mark and was 10-of-23 (43.5 percent) from three-point range.
The Rockets led by as many as 13 points in the second half. Toledo had a chance to ice the game at the free-throw line but missed two of four free throws in the final minute. The Titans eventually tied the score at 86-86 thanks to a McFolley four-point play with 50.7 seconds left and a pair of McFolley free throws at 86-86 with 2.6 seconds left.
Detroit jumped on the Rockets at the start, surging to an 11-2 lead before UT answered with a 14-2 spurt to take its first lead. The lead changed hands four more times in the opening stanza before Toledo closed the half with a 9-2 burst for a 46-42 halftime cushion.
Toledo returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 9 when it hosts Conference USA foe Marshall (6-3). Tip-off time in Savage Arena is 7:00 p.m.
