Thurloway Fires Six-Under 65 in Round 2 of Saint Mary's Invitational

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Sophomore Thomas Thurloway nearly set a school record with an impressive six-under par 65 on Tuesday to move into a fifth-place tie following two rounds at the Saint Mary's Invitational. Thurloway's red-hot play helped the Rockets move up five spots in the team standings into ninth place. The tournament field includes 12 teams ranked in Golfstat's Top 100 and is being played at the par-71, 7,002-yard Poppy Hills Golf Course.

Thurloway, who stands at four-under 138 thru 36 holes, played his first five holes today at two-over par and reached the turn at even-par. He then registered six birdies on a flawless back nine for his best round as a collegian. Thurloway is tied with four other individuals on the leaderboard with USC's Justin Suh (ranked No. 2 nationally) in first place at nine-under par 133 (67-66) and Stanford's Brandon Wu (ranked No. 3 nationally) tied for third place at five-under par 137 (70-67).

Junior Duncan McNeill also carded his best round as a Rocket with a three-under par 68 and is tied for 33rd place at two-over par 144 (76-68). Sophomore Joe Bryce is tied for 40th place at three-over par 145 (73-72), senior Stephen Watts is tied for 62nd place at seven-over par 149 (78-71) and senior Colin Joseph is tied for 83rd place at 11-over par 153 (79-74). Junior Spencer Shoemaker is competing as an individual and is in 96th place at 12-over par (83-75).

The Rockets' eight-under par 276 team total trailed only No. 33 USC and No. 13 Stanford for the best round of the day and was just three strokes away from a school record. The Trojans and Cardinal sit atop the 18-team leaderboard at 13-under and 12-under par, respectively.

The tournament's final round will be held on Wednesday.
