ALLENDALE, MI - The Toledo women's track and field team scored 175.50 points to finish in second place in the Bob Eubanks Open at Grand Valley State University on Friday afternoon. The Rockets finished just two points behind host team GVSU for first place.
"This week was a much better effort and a much better performance by the team," said Toledo head coach
Linh Nguyen. "They are all in a very high volume of training, so seeing some good performances today was a good sign."
Two of the better performance for the Rockets came from
Joan Jepkirui in the 3000-meter run and
Madison Pierce in the long jump. Jepkirui won the 3000-meters in a time of 9:43.31 and Pierce won the long jump with a distance of 5.87 meters (19-3.25), both of which are automatic qualifying marks for the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships.
Jepkirui and four other Rockets combined to take the Top 5 places in the 3000m.
"Madison had a great jump, finished with a big indoor personal record and currently holds the MAC lead," continued Nguyen. "The ladies in the 3000m ran well with Joan, Caroline (Lambert) and Athena (Welsh) leading the way."
UT also had wins in the 400-meter dash from
Nautica Hill (58:15) and in the 600-meter run from Petronela Simiuc (1:37.33). Hill's time was good enough for third-best in the MAC this season.
Toledo's final win came in the triple jump as
Ty'Shai Freeman leaped a distance of 11.28 meters (37-0.25) to record her second win of the season in the event.
Deja Martin finished second with a jump of 11.02 meters.
Madeline Pacella cleared a season-best 1.68 meters (5-6) and now has the third-best height in the conference this season. She finished second via a tiebreaker.
Katie Dewey led the throwers with a second place finish in the shot put (13.47m), while
Christina Johnson took second in the 60-meter dash (7.80) and
Maja Pacaric crossed the finish line second in the mile (5:02.57).
"More importantly than the results was that Janelle (Noe) returned to the track for the first time in over two years," Nguyen concluded. "She epitomizes what it means to be Toledo Tough and is an example of determination and heart for our team."
Noe finished seventh in the mile (7:13.86).
The Rockets head down I-75 to Bowling Green, OH for the Tom Wright Classic on Friday, Jan. 20.
