TOLEDO, OH - Sophomore Jaelan Sanford has been named the Mid-American Conference's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.
A management major with a 3.355 grade-point average, Sanford helped the Rockets to a pair of victories to open the Mid-American Conference season last week by averaging 22.0 points, 4.5 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots per game. Sanford was extremely efficient for the Rockets as he posted a 59.3 field-goal percentage (16-of-27), a 57.1 three-point FG% (4-of-7) and an 80.0 free-throw percentage (16-of-20).Â
Sanford tallied 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting and 3-of-5 from three-point range to help UT to an 88-56 triumph over Buffalo on Tuesday to give the Midnight Blue and Gold its largest margin of victory ever in a conference opener. He followed that up by hitting 8-of-13 shots from the field en route to a second straight 22-point outing in a 91-76 victory over Miami on Saturday.Â
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Sanford and the Rockets will travel to Mt. Pleasant, MI on Friday, Jan. 13 to face Central Michigan. The contest will tip off at 7:00 p.m. and be televised on the CBS Sports Network.
