Junior Isa Echeverri and former Rocket Natalia Gaitán (2009-12) will represent Colombia in the 2016 Rio Olympics. The Colombian National Soccer team was placed in Group G with USA, New Zealand and France. Colombia's first game will take place on Aug. 3 at 9:00 p.m. against France in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Colombia will also face New Zealand on Aug. 6 at 7:00 p.m. and USA on Aug. 9 at 5:00 p.m.
"It's great to have two Rockets representing Colombia," head coach TJ Buchholz said. "Having a current and former UT star play at the Olympic level shows the growth of the program and we're very excited for Isa and Natalia."
Gaitán and Echeverri both have experience playing at the highest level. Gaitán has appeared in 39 matches for the senior national team, including seven in the FIFA Women's World Cup. During those appearances, the Bogota, Colombia native netted four goals. The former UT standout is the captain of the Colombian squad. Gaitan was a four-year letterwinner at Toledo from 2009-2012 and was first-team All-MAC in 2011.
Echeverri has 15 Colombian caps, including one appearance in the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup. The Medellin, Colombia native appeared in the 2-0 upset over France. Echeverri led the Rockets in goals (6) in 2015 and appeared on the All-MAC second team for the second-straight season.
All Olympic matches will be streamed live on NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports App.
