TOLEDO, OH – The Toledo men's tennis team handed out its postseason awards on Tuesday, April 26 at its end-of-the-year awards dinner. Four awards were handed out after a team vote, including Most Valuable Player, Newcomer of the Year, Most Improved Player and Team Leadership awards.
Junior
Stjepan Sisko was named the team MVP for the third-consecutive year and was also presented with the Team Leadership award.
Freshman
Reid Teatsorth was voted the team's Newcomer of the year after his first year with the Midnight Blue & Gold, while fellow freshman
Serjen Olmedo was honored as the team's Most Improved Player.
At the conclusion of the banquet, Sisko was honored with the program's inaugural Brian Engel Award, which is given to the most deserving player who has shown excellence in tennis, academics, leadership, sportsmanship and community service.
"The key to great achievement is that it comes with sacrifice and is never the result of selfishness, which is why Stjepan is well-deserving of this award," said 2015 Engel Award winner and former Rocket,
Mark Singnil.
The award is named for former Toledo tennis player and Varsity 'T' Hall of famer, Brian Engel, and it is voted on by Head Coach
Al Wermer, Brian Engel and the 2015 winner,
Mark Singnil.
"Stjepan is evolving far beyond being our top tennis player and a force in Midwest. This Brian Engel Award also highlights his lesser-known positive interactions and impact with his teammates, opponents, UT and the tennis community," said Wermer.
