HOWIE-IN-THE-HILLS, FL – Toledo stands in fourth place following the opening 36 holes at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular on Saturday. The two-day tournament is taking place at the El Campeón Course (Par-72, 6,966 Yards) at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort and hosted by George Mason University.
The Rockets fired solid rounds of 294 and 290 and trail frontrunner No. 18 South Florida (288-280=568) by 16 strokes, second place Texas Tech (295-286=581) by three and third place Old Dominion (296-286=582) by two.
Sophomore
Stephen Watts is leading UT at two-under par 142 (70-72) and is tied for fifth place. The Larne, Northern Ireland native recorded 10 birdies over the course of today's first two rounds and sits in a two-way tie for the fifth spot.
Senior
Otto Black is two strokes behind Watts and tied for ninth place at even-par 144 (70-74), while sophomore
Colin Joseph is tied for the 23
rd spot at three-over par 147 (78-69). Joseph recorded UT's best score of the day, firing a three-under par 69 in the second round.
The Rockets are one of only two teams to have two players in the Top 10 after 36 holes of competition.
Rounding out Toledo's lineup is senior
Thomas Shindler tied for 39
th place at seven-over par 151 (76-75). Freshman
Spencer Shoemaker also tallied a nine-over par 81 in the first round but was forced to withdraw from the event in the second round.
In addition, freshmen
Jamie Knipe and
Cameron Mills are competing as individuals in this weekend's event and currently stand at 16-over par 160 (76-84) and 19-over par 163 (82-81), respectively.
Individually, USF's Chase Koepka (70-67) sits atop the leaderboard at seven-under par 137, followed closely by Richmond's Matthew Lowe (72-67) and Alabama State's Branson Ferrier (70-69) at five-under par 139.
The third and final round will take place on Sunday with 18 holes of competition in a shotgun start.
