Toledo to Take Part in Mission Inn Spring Spectacular on March 12-13

HOWIE-IN-THE-HILLS, FL – Toledo will take part in the fourth-annual Mission Inn Spring Spectacular on Saturday-Sunday, March 12-13. The two-day tournament will take place at the El Campeón Course (Par-72, 6,966 Yards) at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort and be hosted by George Mason University.

The 54-hole event will feature a shotgun start on both days, with 36 holes being played on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday.

UT will be joined in the 19-team field by Alabama State, Bethune Cookman, Bryant, Campbell, Florida A&M, Florida Atlantic, Hartford, IPFW, Lipscomb, Ohio, Old Dominion, Richmond, South Dakota, South Florida, Southern Illinois, Texas Tech, USC Upstate and host George Mason.

The Rockets' lineup at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular has yet to be determined.

Toledo is coming off a 12th-place finish at the Colleton River Collegiate on Monday-Tuesday, March 7-8 at the Colleton River Plantation Club (Par-72, 7,166 Yards). The Rockets posted a team-score of 81-over par 945 (313-319-313).

Senior Otto Black (76-74-74) paced UT at eight-over par 224 and tied for 12th place. Sophomore Stephen Watts (74-82-77) finished nine strokes behind Black at 17-over par 233 and tied for the 44th spot, followed by freshmen Jamie Knipe (80-83-82) and Spencer Shoemaker at 29-over par 245 to tie for 73rd spot. Rounding out Toledo's lineup was sophomore Colin Joseph (84-81-89), who posted a three-round score of 38-over par 254 and finished in 88th place.

In addition, freshman Cameron Mills (78-80-89) competed as an individual and tallied a mark of 31-over par to finish tied for 79th.

The Rockets will participate in this weekend's event for the first time. Virginia Tech successfully defended its team title at last year's event. The Hokies finished with a three-round score of three-under par 861, 22 strokes better than runner-up East Carolina. Individually, Penn's Austin Powell secured medalist honors with a tally of six-under par 210.

Surrounded by an abundance of natural Florida beauty, the El Campeón 18-hole championship course was designed by Chicago-based course architect George O'Neil and built in 1917 - with further enhancements in 1926 by Charles E. Clarke of Troon, Scotland.

El Campeón is one of the South's oldest golf courses and blends unusual Central Florida elevation changes of more than 85 feet with features of traditional golf design, including spectacular rolling fairways and undulating greens.

The course's signature hole is the Par-5, 17th hole - which features a long double dogleg that has more obstacles than some entire courses.

Following the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular, UT will compete in the FAU Slomin Autism Invite on Friday-Sunday, March 25-27 in Lake Worth, FL.
