Houston, TX - Toledo is 0-2 after the first day of the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational. The Rockets fell 17-2 to No. 24 Texas in five innings this morning. Later in the evening, UT dropped a 9-0 decision to host Houston. With the defeats, Toledo falls to 1-5 on the season.
In game one, the Longhorns jumped on Toledo's starting pitcher, freshman Danni Ryan (3.1 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 7 BB, 0 K), drawing five walks and scoring two runs in the top of the first.
The Rockets could not get a runner past second base until freshman Megan Choate (1-for-2) ripped the first home run of her career. Choate was able to bring in Jessica Lemieux, who had reached first on a fielder's choice.
After the Horns answered with two consecutive home runs of their own, Ryan was swapped out with fellow freshman Heather Webb at the top of the third.
Texas did not let up in the top of the fourth recording its third home run of the game. The Horns scored five runs in the inning to bring in a new Rocket pitcher, freshman Kim Frank. Frank was in the game for seven pitches before UT brought back in its starter Danni Ryan. Toledo was unable to get anything going on offense by the fifth inning.
In game two, Toledo was unable to overcome the Cougars and was defeated in its second five-inning game of the day.
