Toledo Ventures to MAC West Division Preseason Favorite EMU on Saturday

YPSILANTI, MI - Toledo (9-8, 4-2 MAC) will look to get back to its winning ways on Saturday, Jan. 23 with a Mid-American Conference West Division match-up at Eastern Michigan (12-5, 3-3 MAC). Tip-off time is set for 2:30 p.m. in the Convocation Center and can be seen on Buckeye Cable Sports Network (BCSN) as well as Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.

UT has been pegged fourth in the MAC West Division, while EMU has been picked to finish first in the division, according to a preseason vote of the league's 12 head coaches.

The Rockets are currently tied for second in the division standings, while the Eagles are fifth.

The Midnight Blue & Gold is coming off an 81-71 loss at Akron on Wednesday to snap its four-game winning streak.

UT was its own worst enemy against UA, committing a conference-tying high 19 turnovers, which the Zips translated into a whopping 21 points.

Senior Brenae Harris paced the Rockets with 26 points, seven rebounds and a game-high seven assists against Akron, followed by freshman Kaayla McIntyre with a season-high 15 points and seven boards and sophomore Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott had 10 points, respectively.

The trio of Anita Brown, Hannah Plybon and DiAndra Gibson did a bulk of the damage for UA, accounting for 64 of the team's points (79.0 percent). Brown was the catalyst for the victors, finishing with a team-high 29 points to win their fifth-straight meeting against the Rockets.

Toledo, which sports a 4-6 record away from home this season, is fueled offensively by the quartet of Harris, senior Ana Capotosto, Bravo-Harriott and junior Janice Monakana, who are averaging 14.9, 11.5, 9.6 and 9.5 ppg, respectively.

UT will face an ultra-athletic Eastern Michigan squad which has lost three of its last five contests. Most recently, the Eagles dropped a 76-54 decision at Ball State on Wednesday. All-MAC performer Janay Marton led EMU with 23 points.

Eastern Michigan, which is 6-2 at home this season, features three players scoring in double figures and is led by Toledo native Cha Sweeney and Morton at 17.1 and 14.2 ppg, respectively.

UT and EMU will square off for the first of two times this year and 77th time overall.

Toledo holds a 46-30 advantage in the all-time series, but has split the last 10 meetings against its division rival. A season ago, the teams split two regular-season meetings with the away squad winning on the opponents' home court. EMU secured a 75-61 victory in Savage Arena (Jan. 24), before UT responded with an 81-72 triumph in the Convocation Center (Feb. 21). The division rivals then met for a third time in the second round of the MAC Tournament in Cleveland, with the Eagles registering a 74-57 neutral-court win (March 11).

UT also holds a 21-14 (.600) edge in contests played in Ypsilanti and has won the last three meetings in the Convocation Center by an average of 10.6 ppg (72.3-61.7).

Following tomorrow's contest, the Rockets will host arch-rival Bowling Green (6-9, 2-4 MAC) on Saturday, Jan. 30. The opening tip versus the Falcons is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and can be seen on ESPN3.

BGSU holds a 42-31 advantage in the all-time series, but UT has won four of the last five meetings against its arch-rival. A year ago, Toledo claimed a 64-48 road triumph in the Stroh Center (Jan. 31).
