Roger Coe played baseball for The University of Toledo from 1970 through 1974. During his career he was selected first-team All-MAC in 1972 and 1974. He also played on the championship USA World Federation Team in 1973 that brought a gold medal home from Managua, Nicaragua. In 1974, Coe was selected to the Sporting News' All-America first-team roster after establishing UT career records in innings pitched (288.6), strikeouts (298) and ERA (2.34). His records include lowest single season ERA (1.39) and career shutouts with three in 1974 and two in 1973. Those records still have not been broken, standing as a symbol of his hard work and dedication. After Coe completed his baseball career at UT, he was the first choice in the third round of the major league draft by San Diego Padres. He played four years of professional baseball, working his way into the major league 40-man roster. However, his career was cut short after a shoulder injury. "Thanks to coach Stan Sanders and The University of Toledo I was able to obtain great education, both scholastically and socially," says Coe. With my roots now firmly set in the Toledo area, I can look back at my college years and say that UT was where I realized life's dreams do come true if you dedicate yourself and work hard to achieve them." The selection of Coe into the Hall of Fame means, for him, another dream has been reached.
