TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's tennis team will continue its non-conference schedule this weekend as it heads to Cleveland State on Friday afternoon before hosting UIC in the first home match of the 2024 season. The Rockets won their last seven home matches last season, beginning with a defeat of CSU on Jan. 22, 2023.
Last Time on the Court
Toledo (1-1) had a split decision in its season-opener weekend, defeating Dayton before falling to 2023 Big East Champion Xavier. Senior
Cassie Alcala was the only Rocket to go 2-0 last week and took down 2023 Big East Player of the Year Imani Graham from Xavier in two sets from the No. 1 court.
Alcala's efforts earned her the Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week recognition on Tuesday.
Rockets in the Rankings
There are four Rockets with their names in Toledo's record books. Alcala leads the program with 84 career singles wins and ranks No. 3 with 148 career combined wins (singles and doubles). She is three wins away from tying Maha Berti Buirguis (2007-10) with 151 combined wins, and six wins from claiming the crown from Martina Wodzinski (2007-10) who had 154 wins in her career.
Sloane Teske trails Alcala with 77 career singles wins,
Shalini Tallamraju is No.4 with 72 wins, and
Julia Kuszynski is tied for No.19 with 48 career singles wins.
Tracy Mauntler is the winningest women's tennis coach in school history, with 245 career victories in her 21 years at the helm.
About Cleveland State
Cleveland State has won its last three matches, including against the defending 2023 MAC Tournament Champion Ball State on Jan. 27, where junior Oihane Vicario earned her 50
th career singles from the No. 1 court. The Vikings were chosen as the 2024 Horizon League favorite for the first time by the league's head coaches.
Toledo leads 18-3 in the all-time record with Cleveland State and has won the last three matchups since 2020.
About UIC
UIC opened its season Tuesday evening with a narrow 4-3 victory against Butler on Tuesday evening. The Flames ended the 2022-23 season with a 12-10 overall record and were eliminated in the first round of the Missouri Valley Tournament by a 4-3 decision to Murray State.
UIC leads 9-6 in the all-time record with UT, but the Rockets have won the last three dual matches since 2020.
