Rockets Hold First Practice at Ford Field, Lend a Hand at Local Food Bank

DETROIT - The Toledo Rockets held their first practice in Ford Field in Detroit on Monday in preparation for the GameAbove Sports Bowl vs. Pittsburgh on Thursday, Dec. 26 (2:00 p.m./ESPN).

Following the morning practice, the players and coaches spent the afternoon volunteering to pack food at Gleaner's Food Bank in nearby Taylor, Mich.

"In the spirit of Christmas, giving back to the community, this is something we do at home. Doing things like this in the (bowl host) community adds extra value," said Head Coach Jason Candle.

Senior wide receiver Jerjuan Newton, a native of Tampa, Fla., noted that the Rockets have numerous players on their roster from the Detroit area.

"My connection to Detroit is through my teammates," said Newton. "Knowing that we have a lot of players from Detroit, and knowing we can help their community in any way we can is always a blessing."

The Rockets ended the day by attending a welcome dinner along with Pittsburgh at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn.
