Rockets earn first conference honors of season following Sunday’s win at Detroit Mercy
TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo's Madison Medalle and McKenna Schultz have earned their first Mid-American Conference Player of the Week honors of the season. Medalle was named Offensive Player of the Week and Schultz was named Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
Medalle scored a pair of goals and assisted on a goal to secure Toledo's 3-0 victory over Detroit Mercy on Sunday afternoon. She broke a scoreless tie late in the first half off a pass from McKenna Schultz to give Toledo a 1-0 halftime lead. Medalle then doubled the Rockets' lead in the 63rd minute before she fed teammate Grace Turski the last goal in the 82nd minute.
Medalle now has five goals in four games this season, already a career-high goal total for the senior. Sunday's game was the second time this season in which Medalle has scored two goals, the other occurring at UIC on Aug. 17. Shultz's assist was her first of the season, and she leads the UT roster with 360 minutes of action.
The victory was the first shutout of the season, the first win for the Rockets in 2023, and the first victory for first-year head coach Mark Batman.
This is the first career Player of the Week honor for Medalle and the second for Schultz. The last Rocket to earn the conference recognition was Morgan Otteson, who was named Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 20, 2022.
Toledo will play two games at home this week, beginning with Northwood on Thursday evening and Oakland on Sunday afternoon at Paul Hotmer Field.
