Toledo opens the 2023 season with a sweep over 2022 NCAA qualifying team Army on Saturday

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's tennis team proved it will be a force to be reckoned with this season, shutting down Army, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at home. This was the Rockets' first meeting with the Black Knights, who are a consistent NCAA qualifying team.

"This definitely didn't feel like a 7-0 win," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "Army is tough; we were just able to play the bigger points better. It was a high-level match for so early in the season. We had match points against us at No. 2 doubles and No. 1 singles, and we were able to come back on both of those courts."

Toledo secured the doubles team point after getting wins from Mariona Perez and Sanjana Tallamraju at the No. 2 court, and Julia Kuszynski with Laura Morera at the No. 3 court.

Sloane Teske picked up the first match for the Rockets in a quick two-set sweep from the No. 2 court. Perez 's two-set sweep from the No. 4 court put Toledo within one from clinching the match. Shalini Tallamraju then clinched the third singles win for the Rockets in two sets from the No. 3 court. Laura Morera fought tirelessly to win two very close sets on the No. 6 court, and Sanjana Tallamraju came from behind to win the No. 5 court in a three-set tiebreaker.

At the top court, and in the final match of the day, Alcala and Cooper Jackson put up a tight battle. Jackson took the opening set before Alcala took the second set with vengeance. Alcala was down 3-5 in the tiebreaker set and fought off two match points to tie it up at 5-5, and ultimately won the match 7-6(7) for the final win.

Toledo will be back at Twos Athletic Club Sunday afternoon to take the court against Michigan State. First serve between the Rockets and Spartans is set for 1:00 p.m.
