Rockets Open 2022 Season with a 2-2 Tie at Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio – The Toledo women's soccer team opened its 2022 season with a 2-2 tie at Dayton on Thursday night. First-half goals by redshirt sophomore Sissy Novak and graduate student Ashton Cassel gaveĀ Toledo a 2-1 halftime lead, but the Flyers scored the only goal of the second half to earn the tie.

Toledo trailed 1-0 midway through the first half when Novak tied the game off a free kick from midfield, her first collegiate goal since transferring to Toledo last season. Cassel put Toledo ahead 2-1 with 28 seconds left in the first half. Toledo held the lead until the 73-minute mark when Dayton's Noel Blair's free kick was deflected past Rocket goalkeeper Emma Boutorwick to tie the game at 2-2.

"It's always tough to go on the road and play a really strong team like Dayton," head coach TJ Buchholz said. "It was a great opening night for college soccer. Dayton is a really strong team and they gave us fits. I am just really proud of our girls for coming into their environment and battling with them. We went down a goal, but the spirit and the fight was in us and I love that. The goal from Sissy Novak on the free kick was awesome. Ashton Cassel made a beautiful goal. She has a knack to find that opening for a goal and is very precise in her finishing. I am proud of our girls, proud of their effort, and we have a lot to be excited about for Illinois this weekend."
