7/26/2022 10:00:00 AM

TOLEDO, Ohio – A pair of Toledo defensive stalwarts were named to award watch lists today. Outside linebacker Jamal Hines was named to the Bronko Nagurski Award watch list and defensive tackle Desjuan Johnson was named to the Outland Trophy Award watch list.

The Bronko Nagurski Award is presented annually to the nation's top defensive player, while the Outland Trophy is awarded annually to the best interior lineman in college football.

A three-time All-MAC honoree and a 2021 first-team selection, Hines tallied 88 tackles last season while ranking second in the MAC in sacks (10.0) and fourth in TFL (15.0). He was a two-time MAC West Defensive Player of the Week honoree and registered eight pass breakups, tied for second-most on the team and most among linemen.

Johnson earned third-team all-conference honors last season after starting all 13 games and recording 86 tackles, which ranked fourth on the team. He collected 8.0 TFL and 2.5 sacks and had four games with at least 10 tackles. Johnson was named MAC West Defensive Player of the Week after his performance against Notre Dame on Sept. 11.

Both players were previously named to the East-West Shrine Bowl's 1000 List earlier this month.

The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce finalists for the 2022 Bronko Nagurski trophy on Nov. 16 and the winner will be unveiled Dec. 5 at the Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet in Charlotte, N.C. The recipient of the 2022 Outland Trophy will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards, live on ESPN on Thurs., Dec. 8. The official presentation to the winner will be made at the Outland Trophy Awards Dinner sponsored by Werner Enterprises and produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee in Omaha, Neb., on Jan. 11, 2023.
