TOLEDO, Ohio – After a successful season, the Toledo women's tennis team received its first-ever team and singles player Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) 2022 Collegiate Tennis Division 1 Women's Regional Rankings on Thursday. In the Midwest region, the Rockets were ranked No. 8 as a team while sophomore Cassie Alcala was ranked No. 12 as an individual.

"This group is so special and I'm so proud of all the hard work they have put into our program over the past year," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "Being ranked No. 8 in the Midwest is an incredible team accomplishment."

This ranking is Toledo's first-ever regional ranking and Alcala is also the first Rocket to break into the top-20 as a singles player.

Alcala was a First Team All-MAC honoree and was named MAC Player of the Year this past season, a first for the program. She opened the 2022 season with a nine-match winning streak until her first loss to West Virginia's Kendall Kovick on Feb. 26. The next day, Alcala took a two-set victory from George Washington's Stella Wisemann (Feb. 27) and went on to win her next seven matches. Alcala's streak was snapped on April 7 by Miami's Brindtha Ramasamy, marking her only conference loss. Alcala would defeat Ramasamy in a rematch on April 15, and again in the semifinals of the MAC Championships on April 30. Alcala posted a team-best 23-2 overall record and 9-1 mark against MAC opponents from the No. 1 court. 

"This is another well-deserved accolade for Cassie," Mauntler said. "She definitely deserves to be recognized as one of the very best singles players in the Midwest."
