ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Toledo juniors Cassie Alcala and Shalini Tallamraju advanced in the singles main draw of the ITA Midwest Regional Championship with individual wins on Friday afternoon. Toledo combined for a 4-2 record after a day of singles and doubles competition.

"I am so proud of the way my team represents Toledo," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "They battled and competed like crazy today. This team works really hard, and it paid off today."

Tallamraju and senior Mariona Perez opened the day with doubles competition matches against Michigan State's Issey Purser and Marley Lambert, and came out with a huge victory by an 8-4 margin. The Toledo duo were then defeated by Briana Crowley and Sydney Pratt from Northwestern to end their time in the doubles draw.

Alcala and senior Sloane Teske also recorded a first-round victory in doubles competition, an 8-3 final over Prerna Vichare and Sabina Brichakova of Eastern Michigan. In their second match, Alcala and Teske were defeated by Illinois' tandem Kate Duong and Megan Heuser, 8-1.

In singles play, Alcala and Tallamraju each collected a win to make it through another round. Alcala pulled an upset as she swept Lucia Marzal from Ohio State in two sets. Tallamraju won her first set over Diana Lukyanova of NIU, fell in the second set, and took the match with a victory in the third set. Perez was eliminated from the singles draw after falling to Maria Shusharina from Nortthwestern in two sets.

Tallamraju and Alcala will play in the singles Round of 32 on Saturday afternoon.
